TalkTalk set up guide
Welcome to TalkTalk
Let's get everything connected and running smoothly.
Use this page to find everything you need to set up your service, manage your account, and get the best from your Wi-Fi.
Let's get you connected
Getting your TalkTalk service up and running is simple. Whether you've joined us on a Full Fibre or Fibre plan, we'll guide you through everything you need to get connected and start enjoying your service as quickly as possible. TalkTalk provides setup guides for all supported router types and connection methods.
Before you get started, make sure you have:
- Your TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub and cables
- Your activation or installation date
- Access to a power socket (you may need more than one power socket if you're using Wi-Fi boosters)
- Your Fibre Connection Box or main phone socket (our engineers might call it an ONT - Optical Network Terminal)
- Your Wi-Fi details (found on your router label)
If you've got an engineer visit booked, they'll set up your equipment and check your service is working before they leave.
Choose your setup guide
Different broadband packages use different equipment.
If you've chosen Full Fibre, your Wi-Fi Hub connects to a Fibre Connection Box installed in your home.
Your setup usually involves:
- Switching on the Fibre Connection Box.
- Connecting your Wi‑Fi Hub using the supplied Ethernet cable.
- Powering on your Wi‑Fi Hub.
- Waiting for the router light to turn white.
Once connected, you're ready to start using your service.

Fibre customers
If you've chosen a Part-Fibre (FTTC) service through your phone line:
- Locate your main phone socket.
- Connect your Wi‑Fi Hub using the supplied cables.
- Add a microfilter if required.
- Switch on your router.
- Wait for your connection to become active.
The setup process varies slightly depending on the socket type in your home.

Once your Wi‑Fi Hub is set up and connected, it's time to get all your devices online. Whether you're browsing on your phone, streaming your favourite shows, gaming with friends or working from home, connecting your devices correctly will help you get the best experience from your broadband. TalkTalk Wi‑Fi Hubs support both wireless and wired connections, making it easy to connect the devices you use every day.
Find your Wi-Fi details
Your Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password can usually be found on the label attached to your Wi‑Fi Hub.
You'll need these details when connecting your devices.
TalkTalk tip: Keep your Wi‑Fi password somewhere safe so it's easy to find when adding new devices.
Connect a phone, tablet or laptop
Most devices connect in a few simple steps:
- Open your device's Wi‑Fi settings.
- Select your TalkTalk Wi‑Fi network from the list.
- Enter your Wi‑Fi password.
- Wait for the device to connect.
Once connected, your device should automatically reconnect whenever you're at home.
Connect your Smart TV
A reliable connection is especially important when streaming TV and films.
For the best streaming experience:
- Connect your Smart TV to your Wi‑Fi network.
- Where possible, use an ethernet cable for a more stable connection.
- Keep your TV's software up to date.
- Restart your TV and router if you experience buffering.
Did you know? HD and 4K streaming uses more broadband than everyday activities like browsing the web, so it's worth making sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong.
Connect printers and smart devices
Devices like wireless printers, smart cameras and smart home gadgets can usually connect using Wi-Fi or WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).
If your device supports WPS:
- Press the WPS button on your Wi‑Fi Hub.
- Follow the instructions provided by your device manufacturer.
- Wait for the connection to complete.
WPS allows compatible devices to connect without manually entering your Wi‑Fi password.
Make the most of your connection
Your broadband speed is only part of the story. How and where you use your Wi‑Fi can make a big difference to your online experience. A few simple changes can help you enjoy faster downloads, smoother streaming, better video calls and more reliable connections throughout your home.
Find the best spot for your Wi-Fi Hub
- Position your router in an open space
- Avoid cupboards and enclosed areas
- Keep it away from other electrical devices
- Use Ethernet for gaming and streaming where possible
- Learn how to improve Wi-Fi performance
TalkTalk tip: The more open the space around your router, the better your Wi‑Fi signal can travel.

Understanding your first bill
What to expect when you've just joined
In most cases when your service goes live, that's also the day we create your first bill.
For example, if your broadband is activated on 10th October, we'll create your first bill on 10th October.
Your first bill includes:
- Your charges for the month ahead
- Any one-off charges, such as set-up or delivery fees (if they apply)
Example:
- Service activated: 10th October
- Bill created: 10th October
- Monthly package: £30
Your first bill will show £30 for the month ahead, plus any applicable one-off charges.
TalkTalk tip: Taking a few minutes to review your first bill can help you understand your monthly charges going forward.

Your bill gives you a breakdown of the services included in your package.
This may include:

Reviewing your bill regularly can help you stay informed about your services and ensure everything matches your expectations.
