Fix slow broadband speeds

We know how frustrating it can be when your broadband is running slower than expected.

Whether your internet is slow throughout the day, your Wi-Fi signal is weak, your upload speed has dropped, or certain devices aren't getting the speeds you'd expect, this guide will help you identify the cause and get back up to speed.

New to TalkTalk or recently upgraded to fibre?

Your connection may go through a stabilisation period of up to 10 days. During this time, your speeds may vary while the line settles and finds the best possible connection.

If you're still experiencing slow broadband after this period, follow the steps below.

Check your broadband connection

Before changing any settings or troubleshooting your setup, let's first check whether there's a known issue affecting your service.

Run a check with My Connection

The quickest way to diagnose a slow broadband connection is by using My Connection.

My Connection can:

  • Test your broadband line
  • Check for service issues
  • Help identify faults
  • Provide updates on any problems affecting your connection

Start with My Connection before working through the troubleshooting steps below.

Check for network issues in your area

Sometimes slow speeds are caused by network issues outside your home.

Before making any changes to your equipment, check the Service Status to see whether there's a known issue affecting customers in your area.

If there's an outage or maintenance activity underway, you may simply need to wait for the issue to be resolved.

Take a look at our Service Status page to see if there are any issues in your area that might be affecting your services. You can also visit My Connection to quickly test your connection and get SMS updates on any issues.

Use:

These tools can quickly identify whether there's a fault on the network or an issue affecting your line.

If an outage has been reported, no further troubleshooting is required until the network issue has been resolved.

Run a broadband speed test and compare your result against the estimated speed provided when you joined TalkTalk.

If your actual speed is close to your estimated speed, your broadband connection is generally performing as expected.

If speeds are significantly lower than your estimate, continue with the steps below.

Incorrect cabling or equipment setup can affect broadband performance.

Check that:

  • You're using the original cables supplied with your router
  • All cables are connected securely
  • Your router is connected to the main phone socket
  • Any splitters or microfiltersare fitted correctly

Find Your Main Phone Socket

Your main phone socket is usually:

  • Near your front door
  • In a hallway
  • Close to where the external phone line enters your home

Using the main socket helps deliver the most stable connection possible.

A simple restart often fixes temporary connection issues.

  1. Turn off your router at the mains
  2. Turn off your Openreach modem (if applicable)
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Switch everything back on

Allow a few minutes for the connection to re-establish and then run another speed test.

Your broadband bandwidth is shared across all connected devices.

If multiple people in your home are:

  • Streaming
  • Gaming
  • Downloading files
  • Joining video calls

you may notice slower speeds on other devices.

Try disconnecting everything except the device you're testing.

If speeds improve, network congestion within your home is likely the cause.

If this happens regularly, you may benefit from a faster package or additional Wi-Fi coverage products.

Wi-Fi channels can become crowded, particularly in busy residential areas.

If nearby routers are broadcasting on the same wireless channel as yours, this can cause:

  • Slower Wi-Fi speeds
  • Connection drops
  • Poor performance on certain devices

If you use:

  • Wi-Fi Extender Kits
  • Wireless Powerline Adapters

temporarily unplug them and test your broadband speed again.

If performance improves, your adapters may need to be reconfigured.

Follow the setup instructions provided with your device.

Testing with a wired connection helps determine whether the issue is your broadband line or your Wi-Fi signal.

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your device to your router
  2. Run a speed test
  3. Compare the results

If speeds improve significantly when wired, your broadband line is likely working correctly and the issue may be Wi-Fi related.

Improve Your Wi-Fi Coverage

If Wi-Fi coverage is the problem, consider:

  • Moving your router to a more open position
  • Reducing interference from other devices
  • Using a Wi-Fi Booster
  • Adding Total Home Wi-Fi
  • Using compatible eero mesh devices where available

These solutions can help improve speeds in rooms further away from your router.

Plugging your router into your test socket is a good way to find out if there's an issue with your external wiring; however, not all main phone sockets have one:

  • Main phone sockets that have two ports or one port with a horizontal line across the front contain a test socket.
  • Main phone sockets that have one port without a horizontal line don't have a test socket. If this sounds like yours, please skip this step and don't try to unscrew the faceplate.

Here’s how to connect your router to your test socket:

  1. Carefully unscrew the main phone socket faceplate with a screwdriver. If it doesn't have screws, squeeze the sides of the faceplate to detach it
  2. With the faceplate removed, you'll see the test socket inside. It looks similar to the phone port on the front of your main phone socket but without the sliding cover
  3. Plug a microfilter into the test socket
  4. Plug your router's broadband cable into the microfilter port labelled ADSL
  5. Now run a speed test

If your speed improves whilst you're connected to your test socket, there could be a fault with your internal wiring. Slower or similar speeds could indicate a fault with the wiring outside of your home.

Testing from your test socket can help identify whether internal wiring is affecting your broadband speeds.

If your master socket includes a test socket:

  1. Remove the front faceplate
  2. Connect a microfilter
  3. Connect your router directly
  4. Run a speed test

What Do the Results Mean?

Faster speeds in the test socket

This may indicate an issue with your home's internal wiring.

No improvement

This may point to a problem outside your property and could require further investigation.

TalkTalk App Customers

Check your service

Use the TalkTalk App and My Connection to run diagnostics and check for faults affecting your broadband service.

Check your estimated speed

Run a speed test and compare the result against the estimate provided when your service was activated.

Check your setup

Make sure your equipment is correctly connected and positioned away from obstructions.

Restart your devices

Restart all connected devices and allow them time to reconnect.

A full reboot often resolves temporary performance issues.

Disconnect devices you aren't using

Too many active devices sharing bandwidth can reduce performance across your home network.

Temporarily disconnect unused devices and test again.

Change your wireless channel

Your eero system will manage channels automatically, but interference from nearby networks can still affect performance.

Try a wired connection

Connect directly to your eero device using Ethernet and run a speed test.

If wired speeds are significantly better than Wi-Fi speeds, the issue is likely related to wireless coverage rather than your broadband service.

Using a VPN? It May Impact Your Speed

If you're working from home and connected to a VPN, you may experience slower speeds.

A VPN encrypts and reroutes internet traffic, which can reduce:

  • Download speeds
  • Upload speeds
  • Overall connection performance

To check whether this is affecting you:

  1. Disconnect from the VPN
  2. Run another speed test
  3. Compare the results

If speeds improve significantly, the VPN may be limiting performance rather than your TalkTalk broadband service.
