Beware of Call Connection services

Some websites list phone numbers that charge you extra to connect to well-known companies like HMRC, DVLA or the RAC.
These calls can cost much more than calling the company directly.

What to watch out for

Call connection numbers often:

  • Start with 084, 087 or 09
  • Charge high per-minute rates
  • Put you in a queue (so costs can quickly add up)
  • Connect you to a company you could contact for free or at a lower cost

Quick ways to avoid extra charges

  • Always use the official website of the company you want to contact
  • Check your bill or official emails for correct contact numbers
  • Avoid calling numbers that start with 084, 087 or 09 unless you’re sure of the cost
  • Double-check numbers you find through online searches

Not sure if a number is safe?

Before you call:

  • Check it on the Ofcom website  Premium rate service checker – as legitimate services need to be registered.
  • Listen carefully when the call connects – providers must tell you it’s a call connection service

Good to know

  • These services are legal and regulated
  • But they don’t give you faster access — you’ll still wait in a queue
  • You’ll usually pay more than calling the organisation directly

Summary

  • Avoid numbers starting 084, 087 or 09
