Using the 999 BSL Emergency Video Relay Service

We understand the challenges British Sign Language (BSL) users might face in communicating effectively in the face of an emergency. In line with Ofcom recommendations, we are now promoting use of the 999 BSL service on all platforms. 999 BSL aims to provide a 24/7 emergency response service to those with hearing or speech impairments, by connecting the user with a trained BSL interpreter. The interpreter will then relay the information to the relevant emergency authority (Ambulance, Police, Fire, or Coastguard), to ensure the safety and protection of everyone.

We've provided answers to some common questions about the service below, but if you need some further support, we encourage you to visit the 999 BSL FAQs page .

999 BSL is a service that connects you to British Sign Language Interpreters remotely through an app or a web-based platform, who then will relay the conversation with the call handler and emergency authorities. This service has been set up so that no deaf person will be excluded when they need to make an emergency call, therefore saving lives.

The 999 BSL service is for emergency situations ONLY, for example:

  • if someone is seriously injured
  • lives are at risk
  • being in danger or harm
  • a serious offence is in progress or has just has been committed.

For less urgent situations, please use Police 101 (wherever possible) and NHS111 through SignVideo - not 999 BSL, unless there is an emergency.

There are three ways to reach the emergency authorities through 999 BSL service:

There are three simple steps, you will need to:

  1. Open the app or webpage (If you're using the app, make sure you download it beforehand)
  2. Press the red 'Call 999 BSL now' button
  3. Connect to an interpreter
